Cheap Hosting, GoDaddy and Your Site’s Health!

Smackdown’s Michael VanDeMar just posted about GoDaddy host service security issues, including GoDaddy hosted WordPress sites getting hacked. Apparently GoDaddy insists the problem is due to outdated WordPress installations, saying that “both staying up to date and also site security is the responsibility of the customer, not of GoDaddy.

GoDaddy is NOT wrong: if you’re NOT careful with your blogsite passwords and if you’re managing, but NOT updating WordPress yourself, they’re actually right. And clients, we do manage your hosting, security and also your updates as a part of this service! But VanDeMar’s point is that in some cases the sites are updated, still hacked and GoDaddy still doesn’t seem to care.

And while we sincerely appreciate his point, ours is NOT to go on about GoDaddy’s weak position in this situation. It’s not that this has also been happening with Network Solutions clients. And it’s not even because I recently saw *another* high profile business consultant recommend a super cheap host service, with unlimited bandwidth and a free one click WordPress install to a large audience of small business owners.

Our point is to say “heads’ up folks!” – If you go the low price / bare bones service & shared hosting route, your site, all of the content and your brand are at risk! If you go this route, our point is to say, “you shouldn’t expect much!”
