If you read this blog regularly you know we feel social media sites with an audience are highly valuable promotional opportunities, but never to be confused with our own brand!

We love having a presence in Twitter & Facebook, but our goal is to establish a long term connection with clients & prospects here at this site. It’s where our brand lies, where all our content is carefully organized, will remain organized and it’s where we present ourselves the best. And, unlike in those networks, it’s an environment we can control… for the long term!

Leanne Hoagland-Smith’s piece, ‘Social Media: Is It Right For You?’ in Northwest Indiana’s Post Tribune lends some useful insight for those jumping on to this marketing bandwagon.

Managing Business In Both Tangible And Virtual Worlds

We’re all busy in our tangible business world; however, our target customers are researching and networking product & service information in the virtual world every day. While we all know how to manage our tangible worlds, the pressing question with business people is how can we simultaneously succeed in the virtual one?

The key is to maximize content visibility, not just in the search engines but, every where possible [via back links, feed connections to other sites, bookmarks, direct subscriptions] on the web with a sound blog networking strategy!

Independent Blogsites Drive Leads, Now And In The Future

It’s important to establish an independent brand with content that’s in your control, now and in the future! Social Networks like Twitter, Facebook and MySpace are incredible for visibility, but their control over the environment and status as ‘the brand’, suggests they may be best leveraged as networking tools. MySpace’s rapid decline only supports the point that if social networks loose their audience they’re no longer valuable to your brand, so be careful how much you invest in them. Especially consider who might be next and ultimately how you should be careful with your long term brand.

Independent Blogsites allow us an unlimited ability to detail our every day practical knowledge [current content for all to see]. They’re a sustainable place for our tangible qualities in a virtual world! When used to their maximum capability, blogsites can push our content to an unlimited number of different places [i.e. search engines, social networks!!, other blogsites and websites] all capable of driving traffic back to our brand. When managed correctly, more content in more and more places can mean mushrooming traffic and a pipeline of new leads!

Take a look at what happens when we post here on Kinetic Knowledge:

* post appears on our site’s home page
* post appears in a category channel or two on our site
* our Twitter accounts automatically pick post up, notifying followers of the new content
* our Facebook fan page automatically picks it up, notifying any followers
* our profile pages in LinkedIn automatically pick it up
* our profile pages in Realtown automatically pick it up
* the post is picked up by any sites or blogs that have picked up a RSS feed connection to us
* a Feedblitz supported email blast goes out to thousands of direct email subscribers
* all RSS feedreaders [i.e. MyYahoo, MyMSN, Google Reader accounts] with a Kinetic RSS feed connection receive the post
* Google and all the search engines are pinged to come crawl and index the new post for keywords and key phrases
* and there are many other places I haven’t gotten around to registering us for that could push us even further…

Each one of of these connections occurs with each post we generate! It’s our heavily branded & sustainable home base location. The strategic intention is to capture and bring traffic back to where we’re truly represented; to where we live and sell!

Develop Your Blog Networking Strategy!

Automated Content Delivery

Again, use your blog to maximize the visibility of your content. Your blogsite should be search engine optimized [well configured / easily crawled], but be sure you auto- submit content into heavily trafficked environments such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and any others you deem relevant. Anything you can do to be more visible in more places!

Use Alerts!

One way to gain timely awareness of potentially relevant online business conversations happening elsewhere on the web is to set up Google Alerts. For the subjects you want to follow (i.e. Luxury Homes Peoria IL, Planned Communities Oregon, Toronto Condos), when any new content is identified Google will notify you via active links in an email. You can then easily follow that link and join the conversation. When you do, always look for opportunities to link back to your own blog!

Comment!

In order to be an excellent blog networker, you must learn how to use commenting on other blogs. The idea is simple: you want to look for relevant conversations in which to comment about. When you leave a comment, you also leave a link back to your own blog. The most effective way to approach commenting is this:

Local Blog Traffic Through Comments - Look for several local blogs that you can regularly comment on. Tip: keep a close eye on your local news sources and be active there as they may actually use you a source of local trade news and information. The newspapers’ revenues have been decimated by the Craig’s List and Autotrader.com’s of the world, so they need local coverage support. Why not you? And then these don’t necessarily have to be relevant conversations, just things that you have some passion in talking about. In theory any local traffic will be relevant to your mission. Local blog commenting will also get those other local bloggers to take notice of you as an author. It is feasible that they will begin to start commenting on your site and use you as a link resource as well.

Gain Relevant Inbound Links Via Comments – Look for blogs that are having similar conversations to those on your own site. Leave a comment in the pertinent string of conversation and provide a direct link to the relevant blog post on your own site (not to your homepage!) so you are actually adding value to that conversation. This will connect the two similar conversations together and potentially funnel some of the traffic from that third party blog to your own.

Don’t forget: Just because you leave a comment doesn’t mean it will get approved. Most bloggers practice comment moderation. If you are respectful of their platform and add value through the comment you leave they are likely to approve you, but the discretion is up to them!

Again folks, this is about leveraging your every day practical knowledge as advertising for your services. People are searching and networking for someone like you all over the web… the question is are you there when they do? You Really Must Have A Blog Networking Strategy!

If so, you’re not unlike most small to medium sized business owners who, frankly, are busy. And, without getting ahead of ourselves, we shouldn’t confuse search [or even web] optimization with actual conversion either. Ultimately, it’s about money changing hands. Sales!; however, one supports the other… so first things first.

Just the other day I was sitting in a New Jersey Staffing Association meeting and, amongst attendees, concern for social networking was a common theme. To a degree, there’s a resistance to change and a new landscape for advertising. Worry not! Did you know your blog can easily be the center of your social media presence online, pushing content out to the search engines and [simultaneously] into various social media environments? In fact most social networks accept automated blog feeds into your [Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.] account, virtually eliminating any duplication of effort. Not to suggest you shouldn’t participate. You should! At least some and we’ll talk a little about it below, but good business blog sites are powerful search & social network advertising tools!
What Exactly is Social Networking?

Don’t make social media any more complicated than it truly is. Social media could be defined as interaction with your content in any way that establishes your presence online. It’s really just business folks publishing useful content to various [network or blog] sites for others to consume. It’s people communicating with each other, virtually. While blogs can establish depth and a unique brand for your presence online, social networks are more a realtime form of coverage. They’re both tools you can use to develop trust with empowered people who have an ability [nowadays] to gather information, at will. And here’s the value proposition: people aren’t just looking for what you offer every day, they may appreciate a more human or differentiated message. Maybe they’ll subscribe directly? Maybe they will forward to someone else or, better yet, expose you to an entire audience via link? Maybe they’ll buy something?

Let’s explore a successful social network example of ours. While we work with all types of small to medium sized business, a lions’ share are in the real estate industry. I try to follow their social networks, like Active Rain, via feeds I subscribe too. My participation, admittedly, has been less blogging and more commenting lately. It’s the case mostly because, unlike those networks mentioned above and so far as I know, AR hasn’t allowed an incoming blog feed unless it’s coming via their own product. So, I’ve already got two blogs and to copy, paste and then format is time… and [no knock whatsoever on AR, which is terrific] I’m trying to manage mine. Anyway, I comment where [I hope] I can add value. The other day a person blogged in AR on being relevant online. I commented, linking back to a piece I had written called ‘Confused By Search Engine Optimization? Try This ‘Laypersons Guide To Understanding SEO’ No sooner had I, traffic poured in to the post and we benefited from several new lead conversions.

Here’s a second example based on blogs & RSS. Amongst others, I subscribe to Matt Furey’s Super Human Success Blog, which is ‘power of positive thinking’ brilliance. SHSB, by the way, was pointed out to me by a gentleman who found us searching. Ever since then, I’ve subscribed to Furey’s RSS feed. Now I’m linking [see back links below] to him so that you to can enjoy his work and I’ve even read enough to *buy* one of his books.

Are you beginning to get this?

We speak with folks every day about Social Networking. They want to jump into social networks & blogs, mostly because of the pressure they feel from business media coverage and all the gurus out there. Ultimately, the successful networker will share the kind of coverage that distinguishes and that future clients appreciate. By the way, be careful when taking subjective [social network] advice from anyone giving it. There are so many variables out of your control, so there’s not necessarily an exact formula. There is a leap of faith involved here! A good rule might be to ask yourself, “Has this supposed expert’s income ever been tied to this stuff?”

So, while it all sounds possible and it’s certainly the most cost effective advertising you’ll do, *nothing worth doing is ever easy*. There is always competition! It’s important to get a strategy… or risk wasting valuable time and effort!

Can Blogs Feed Social Media & search, Search Feed Social Media and Social Media Feed Search?

They can all support each other for you and, to a degree, they can do it simultaneously! Says Fastcompany, “Search engine optimization and social media are both powerful marketing tools for small businesses, but when you combine them they become even better: they’re the peanut butter & jelly of Web marketing.”

Search optimization is really based upon key phrases, relevance and authority. It stems from your content. Maybe you’re being discovered in the search engines via your blog or maybe for your social network presence. We’ve certainly written about how business blogs’ are the means to generate broad & competitive organic search indexing. Social media is also a way to generate more presence with large audiences, but it’s also a way to generate back links. Sites with incoming links are often perceived by search engines to be more relevant. Back links are a signal that can move your key phrases upward in the rankings. And people certainly search!

Advice: don’t get carried away with building back links. The search engines understand the manipulation of back links, so they’ve built algorithmic filters to grade and to weed out poor or excessive back linking. They’ve also moved a lot of algorithmic emphasis to how your content is reacted too, lessening some of the weight for links. To add some more caution, some social networks are nofollow [i.e. prevent search spidering] meaning you should be there for the audience AND NOT the search indexing. Why do they nofollow? Well, they want to remain relevant as a network and the nofollow policy cuts down on the incentive to spam the network with bad links. Obviously, no one considers spam a value so spammy networks get less and less traffic. Other social sites, like twitter, are search indexing friendly [...for the time being.] Twitter is a great example of a social network that a number of business people use to be [Twitter] audience visible; to be findable in the search indexes and also to drive links back to their primary brand.

And the end of the day, add value… or don’t expect much to happen. Your time is valuable and the goal is new business, so go into this with a sincere long term view!

Your Blog Is Your Brand

Again, the purpose here is to bring some logic to what amounts to a changing landscape for small to medium sized business advertising. Part of the message above is beware of the hype or a short term fix. Focus on building trustworthy & sustainable brand! And the other part is that it doesn’t have to be the ‘time suck’ many perceive it to be.

It’s time consuming to write in so many different places all of the time. Just copying and pasting, then reformatting requires it; however, pushing *branded* content out to the search engines, as well as into the various social media environments simultaneously, broadens your presence without eating up your time. Blogging, *strategic* participation in different networks, keeping an eye on important feeds and commenting where you can add value [for a target market] is a very general, but manageable, approach. Just diving into a social environment isn’t necessarily strategic, but ‘taking a leap of faith’ and focusing on adding value for new business in return is a healthy trustworthy approach. Better yet, it’s proven!

We’re bias yes, but we feel your advertorial business blog should be the center of your overall social media presence.
Has Anyone Ever Promised You Top Organic Search Results?

If someone tells me they can improve my results, which are pretty good, I’d ask, “Really, what information do you have on recent algorithm [proprietary] adjustments and what do you know about my competitors’ activity that might affect the results?” See, search engines constantly change the way they rank content AND activity around our competitors online presence is obviously not static [at least it won't be forever]. So, the position we hold for a key word or phrase today may very well change tomorrow.

Lately Google has hinted to a higher weight for consumer driven signals such as bookmarks, subscriptions and even the choices they make from a search results page. Logic would have Google wants to protect the quality of their search results by reducing the weight of signals like meta data & back links, considering the ease for their manipulation. But even then, there are over 200 [mostly unknown by design!] signals used to compare us and our search marketing competitors.

If Promised Search Results Were Possible, Are They Sustainable?

In theory, there are best practices for in page [site architecture], on page [content] and off page [links, subscriptions, bookmarks, search choices, etc., etc.] SEO; however, is anyone truly an expert to the degree they can promise long term search results?

Even Google’s own Search Engineers are, at times, unaware of changes that occur. “When Barry asked me about ‘position 6′ in late December, I said that I didn’t know of anything that would cause that. But about a week or so after that, my attention was brought to something that could exhibit that behavior. We’re in the process of changing the behavior; I think the change is live at some datacenters already and will be live at most data centers in the next few weeks.” Matt Cutts

Sure there are lots of facts out there, but also misunderstood or false facts and/ or those that rapidly lessen in importance. For instance PageRank, which measures and compares our links, is one heavily documented signal; however and as suggested above, PageRank is no where near as important as it once was.

Yes there are going to be new hacks, but know the war between Google and such tactics will carry on. There’s a ‘leap of faith’ for a business to commit to blogging; however, by proactively sharing good information for anyone’s use the benefits can be enormous.
What’s a Brand and Why is It So Important?

Wikipedia says brand is “…all the expectations associated with a product or service. People engage in branding to align expectations, creating the impression certain qualities or characteristics make it special or unique. A brand is therefore one of the most valuable elements in an advertising theme, as it demonstrates what the brand owner is able to offer in the marketplace.”

According to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, “The internet is fast becoming a cesspool where false information thrives.” He continues, “brands were increasingly important signals that content can be trusted.” He also shared Google is looking at brand metrics as a means for determining search quality saying, “Brands are how you sort out the cesspool.” Aaron Wall, SEOBook.com, suggests search engines have become sophisticated enough to see through the cesspool. He says, “Search engines only trust us if others trust us too. Search engines follow people.”

Ultimately, at least nowadays, there is a much broader approach to the comparison of our content than just links… and that’s good for small to medium sized business. Placed simply, you must differentiate your value proposition and convey trust on the Internet because human interaction with your content counts… or is counted.

We’d add that with marketing/ advertising online, your brand is sustainable for the long term!

Can I Use Social Networks to Build Brand?

Lots of folks feel creating a presence through Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn & other social networks is what they need in order to establish brand. Probably wrong! You can only truly develop brand by creating something that’s your own. In fact, when you’re in a free environment or one that is someone else’s [brand] your brand is secondary.

Says CopyBlogger, “For me, there’s really no appeal in spending a lot of time creating “user-generated” content via a social networking application. That’s like remodeling the kitchen in a house you rent.”

While you can demonstrate accomplishments or list products and services in a social network environment, know that you won’t be completely differentiated. You won’t establish independent positioning for a target marketplace; however and to counter these points, social network environments are very valuable. They’re potentially large new audiences and any visibility can bring good things. We certainly recommend pushing your blogs’ content, albeit branded, into the social networks. With RSS, it can be automated eliminating any duplicate effort. In fact, we’ve been doing this successfully ourselves to the tune of a 1st months spike in total traffic of 35%. Obviously, participation is important and that’s for another post, but the point is more about getting off to a productive start.

So, Can a Blog Establish My Brand?

Online, we feel blogs are the premiere tool for helping you to establish brand! By enabling you to publish good content at will, you can demonstrate knowledge and an enthusiasm for your craft. Simultaneously, there can be the creation of trust. Blogs let you tell a story over and over again, allowing prospects to become familiar and comfortable with you. It’s something a website won’t do because, generally, they’re static and impersonal.

According to Internet Guru Dave Taylor, “Blogs have proven to be a terrific tool to help drive traffic to your website and to build your brand. You can take advantage of this tool [your blog] to differentiate yourself in the crowded online, and offline, marketplace.

So far as your target marketplace is concerned, some things you should consider with your blog include:

Is my blog site easy to navigate?

Is my blog domain unique enough to be memorable?

Does my blog design convey my brand?

Is my brand synonymous with my product or service?

Is my written coverage worthy of trust?

Am I worthy of conversation?

Am I worthy of voluntary direct subscription?

Am I worthy of leads?

How Do I Establish Brand with My Blog?

At least, you’ve got to make a disciplined commitment to write with your Blog. You should always work to convey your brand. Propagating branded content into social network environments will broaden your brand’s reach.

Building brand takes some persistence: passion for it will only enhance that effort. Sure, there are techniques that lend themselves to immediate findability, but learning curve can be minimized with better blogging practices education. At a minimum, provide consistent on-topic coverage that is truly useful to your target marketplace. You can be assured, they are [re]searching related key words & phrases each and every day! If not yet, they will eventually discover the convenience of permission based marketing/ subscription to your blog.

Client Bryan Bomba has established high ranking position for the most sought after topic phrases in his local marketplace. His search findability not only generates traffic, but a trusted network of direct subscribers. Recently he shared that his Hinsdale IL Real Estate blog subscription numbers are in the thousands. Subscription means Bomba remains on radar screens, regardless of whether or not those prospects continue to search. It’s likely some will link or recommend him to others… and on and on the networked web carries his brand!

Connor MacIvor, an impassioned Los Angeles Real Estate & Community Blogger, shared that in his 1st 90 days, “… we actually have 15 new clients, 10 relocations from other states. In each case, they volunteered that they had found us on the web and that they read our Blog. I’m convinced our commitment to sharing lots of good local information via the blog allows for people to find us and develop a comfort level and more importantly to see if we would mesh with their personality type.”

Not only have they established findability and new business, they’ve become trusted sources for local real estate trade media. It equates to having established brand. And remember that while theirs are local small to medium sized businesses, they still compete with large brands for visibility.

Seth Godin says you need to be remarkable, but this shouldn’t scare anyone because one person’s remarkable isn’t necessarily anothers’. We like to say you should share what you see, hear, know and have to offer minimum twice per week. Knowledge and a sincere enthusiasm for any topic has proven appeal!

The Miami Public Relations Blog shares some great guidance from Brand Consultant Bruce Turkel with seven steps to building brand [with your blog blog]:

All about them. People care most about things that affect them. In order to reach them, you need to communicate in a way that tells them ‘what’s in it for me?’”

Hearts then minds. People make decisions based on emotions and justify their decisions with the facts. To get someone to pay attention, you must get them emotionally.

Make it simple. Today’s world is a busy, confusing place. To make an impression and an impact, your message must be succinct and digestible.

Make it quick. Enough said.

Make it yours. A message is truly powerful only if it is associated with you or your product. Make sure that the message you’re presenting belongs only to you and you alone.

All five senses. Conversations involve all of the human senses. To communicate effectively, make sure you’re engaging as many of your audience’s senses as possible.

Repeat, repeat, repeat. Your message must be repeated often enough that your audience can act on it. Ironically, this doesn’t give you license to be repetitive, but demands new and creative ways to reinforce your position.

Can You Summarize the Benefits of Branding with My Own Blog?
