Be on the lookout for a new form of comment spam!

The battle to prevent blog comment spam rages on! Please be on the lookout for a new form of comment spam! We’re beginning to see a number of semi- flattering comments that attempt to lull us Bloggers into hitting our Comment Moderation ‘OK’ buttons. Here’s an example that I missed myself:

It doesn’t appear that this is a bot driven comment; however the purpose likely remains the same and it’s not to add value to our Kinetic Blog. This comment and those like it are driven by an interest in placing links. The site owners are attempting to gain higher rank in the search engines on your dime. Let’s have a look at where the link behind the name goes:

At first glance, it looks like a perfectly legitimate site. There are a couple Google Adsense ads, but nothing like ‘the spam blogs’ that solely exist to generate a [confused] visitors’ commission paying clicks. However, dig a little deeper and you’ll find no author profile and then lots of buried or hidden outbound links:

Folks, review your comments in moderation! Even with those that appear to be OK take the extra second to have a look at the accompanying URL before approving!

We’ve added Captcha to all Kinetic Blogs!

We want to help our clients to be as productive as they can be so we’re adding Captcha to all Kinetic Blogs! We feel that Blog comment moderation is a business requirement! We’ve written about some of the more obvious reasons, including vindictive comments, comment spam and search engine mistrust here. Let’s face it, professionalism is a requirement of your business and if your Business- Blog is riddled with corrupt comments it only serves to lower those professional standards. Logic would have that moderation, where comments can be reviewed prior to their becoming a public piece of a Blog’s overall content offering, is a required business exercise

Unfortunately, we’ve found there is another problem with comments and that is an intolerable amount of comment spam. These days, it’s not only the humans that comment on Blogs: bots do it too! Regardless of an ability to moderate, the exercise of reviewing hundreds of corrupt comments spread by uninvited bots [software existing to place degenerate comments with links] every week is unproductive for a business

So, we’re adding Captcha to all Kinetic Blogs! Now, in order to post a comment, Captcha will require visitors to answer a simple challenge/ response test, thereby helping to prove [at least] they are human. Now, Kinetic Knowledge clients will be moderating productive comments that have a potential to add value to their blog
