Be on the lookout for a new form of comment spam!
The battle to prevent blog comment spam rages on! Please be on the lookout for a new form of comment spam! We’re beginning to see a number of semi- flattering comments that attempt to lull us Bloggers into hitting our Comment Moderation ‘OK’ buttons. Here’s an example that I missed myself:
It doesn’t appear that this is a bot driven comment; however the purpose likely remains the same and it’s not to add value to our Kinetic Blog. This comment and those like it are driven by an interest in placing links. The site owners are attempting to gain higher rank in the search engines on your dime. Let’s have a look at where the link behind the name goes:

At first glance, it looks like a perfectly legitimate site. There are a couple Google Adsense ads, but nothing like ‘the spam blogs’ that solely exist to generate a [confused] visitors’ commission paying clicks. However, dig a little deeper and you’ll find no author profile and then lots of buried or hidden outbound links:

Folks, review your comments in moderation! Even with those that appear to be OK take the extra second to have a look at the accompanying URL before approving!

I get the same sort of thing from people in my industry (real estate). They’ll make a comment that is somewhat relevant to the post they’re referencing, and then place a blatant “go here for more info” type link in the body of the comment. If the comment is relevant, I delete the link in the body of the comment and ok the comment. If the comment is clearly for the purpose of obtaining a link, I delete it and move on. Worst offender: Lenders! I find that the most well-written comments are often from local readers who don’t supply a link at all.

Yes, and you have some pretty powerful sites. Beyond the nefarious efforts mentioned above I believe this behavior with everyday proprietors’ has evolved in the social networks. Folks definitely see those as a good inbound linking [to their own site] opportunity.
Its’ important to review your comments in moderation carefully, but at the end of the day, its’ your call

Thanks for writing this! I hope my email to you helped spur this topic because it confused me too. Glad I caught it and was able to at least ask about. Thanks!
