Podcasting Vs. Video Blogging For Use in Business
This is a continuance of the series on podcasting, if you are new to the concept be sure to read the first article: What Is A Podcast? Let’s Get Down to the Basics
So, video blogging vs. podcasting… I bet several questions arise when you think of the two:
- What is Video Blogging
- Is one better than the other, do each perform different functions?
- Should I consider doing both?
- How do I get started?
Good questions, let’s try to tackle them one at a time.
What is a Video Blog?
In the last post you may recall there was a comment question about video blogging – what is it? Let’s try to expand upon the idea. Consider the following:
- blog -> content -> RSS Delivery
- podcast -> audio/video -> RSS Delivery
Think of video blogging as the best of both worlds. It combines blogging (text based content) with audio/video distribution (meaning you create blog posts and embed audio or video files). Similar to blogging or podcasting alone, your video blog content (which now contains embedded audio or video files) outputs to an RSS feed that is available for subscription.
Why Do I Need Podcasting Then?
Video blogging is great for the search engines. Is is a way to get exposure for both your content and your individual audio or video files. However, if you are concerned about iTunes compatibility and proper file delivery to mobile devices – straight up podcasting is necessary. A podcast contains certain ‘enclosures’ (think of them as instructions that help iTunes [or the podcatcher] to interpret data) that allow it to function well in programs such as iTunes and other similar players. The enclosure element specifies the audio or video file to be played, without it iTunes doesn’t know what to play. Enclosures often contain things like type, title, author, episode, genre, category, and summary information about the audio or video file. If iTunes has no instructions for how to classify your file, then you can be certain that the file will have a hard time finding it’s way to an iPod or PDA.
In The Ideal Scenario, Do Both!
Podcasting and Video Blogging help you achieve different outcomes. Ultimately podcasting will help get your audio and video files distributed to remote players such as iPods, PDA phones, and even output directly to computer speakers. A video blog serves a much larger function – it allows you to add unique and defining content to describe the audio or video file in detail. It also ties that content intimately to the audio or video file in the search engine, giving you the opportunity to get additional visibility to those files around certain subject matter or topics. A podcast will also get indexed by the search engines, but there is much less for the spider to digest as the only text associated to your podcast is packaged with it in the enclosures. If you have the resources, podcasting and video blogging complement one another quite nicely!
How Do I Get Started?
If you have a blog and you have some video files that can be uploaded to something like YouTube, video blogging is a piece of cake. YouTube [and similar services] videos are represented by an embed code that can usually be directly inserted into a blog post. On the public side it looks like your YouTube video lives directly within your blog post. Readers can play the video directly from the blog post. Here’s a great example (and a good article!)
