Twitter This, Twitter That.

Many of you by now have likely heard about Twitter .  If you’re like me, you ask yourself, what is this and why on earth do I need it?  Personally, I resisted for a really long time!  However, in the last two months I relented and starting to dip my toes in the water.  I’m not yet fully up to speed but I have noticed some interesting things about tweeting that I’d like to share.

First, what is Twitter?  I’ve heard it compared to the ‘modern day version of business golf’ or ‘passing notes to your friends in class’, but ultimately Twitter is a really just a mini blog space with a powerful potential for connection.  You have 140 characters to update your sphere with interesting and valuable tidbits of information as often as you like.  Who is your sphere?  Anyone that wants to follow you.  How do they get updates?  Immediately via the web or Twitter desktop tools in real time.

What is the value you ask?  Let me tell you a quick story…

I recently had the pleasure of attending a women’s real estate conference presented by Bernice Ross.  It was a three day event that turned out to be a bit more time intensive than I expected.  Because I couldn’t really ‘work’ and absorb at the same time, I decided to develop something that had been on my radar for awhile – my Twitter account.  I listened to the presenters and tweeted away for those three days.  Not only did I gain recognition from my fellow attendees, I was also given nods from some folks out there in Twitterland whom I didn’t know.  I received two follow Fridays (in Twitter a link to your account and a thank you for your tweets that week) – one from someone with 25,000 followers.  All of the sudden my Twitter account just got me visibility to 25,000 people – wow!

This is the real power of Twitter.  You may not be impressed with your own followers or even know who they are for that matter, but if you commit to adding valuable tidbits to the community those followers are likely to re-tweet your messages or send follows to their own subscribers.  This exponentially increases your exposure to people out there on the net.  Imagine you tweeted a link to one of your blog posts and someone with 25,000 followers re-tweeted it to their subscribers.  That’s pretty powerful stuff.

This leads me to the importance of the content in your tweets.  I follow people I believe will give me good tips, links and education – if you want to attract followers, you should strive to provide the same kind of content.  Does anyone really care that you are going to the store or out to eat, probably not – would they follow a link to a blog review about the top twenty restaurants in Denver, five valuable Twitter search engines or a free e-book, maybe!  In 140 characters what pearls can you send out to the community?  The more you send, the more likely you are to be followed and re-tweeted.

In recent news, Google seems to be contemplating the purchase of Twitter for total Internet domination  8-)   In any case, this seems to be a technology that will only continue to advance.  If you’re interested in tweeting your blog posts, please check out our social networking package or our available Twitter plug-in.

Using PDFs in your online Marketing Mix

Did you know that your blog is equipped to allow you to upload PDF files to our server?  You can easily upload a file and create

a link to that file from the blog post you are writing.  This is great for marketing brochures and market reports.  Here’s a step by step:

  • Login to your blog
  • Go to Write, Post and begin a new blog post
  • Create the bulk of your blog post first, it will likely be easier
  • Place your cursor in the post where you want to create a link to your PDF
  • To upload your PDF file to the server click on the “Add Media” * button above the editor icons
  • Click “choose files to upload” and select the PDF file from your local machine
  • The active link text for your PDF will be equal to what you enter in the title field of the resulting popup
  • Click “Insert into Post” and your link will appear in your blog post
  • That’s it!  Aside from saving the post of course :)

Things to consider:

Your system allows for a large amount of upload space that you’ll unlikely reach.  However, whether with photos, videos, audios or PDFs – be cognizant of your file sizes.  Not only because it’s better for your system but also because large files cause increased load times for online visitors and search engines frown upon it.  So be sure to web optimize your photos and pdf files before uploading to your blog!

Just Another Reminder: Create links to your blog from your websites!

It’s very important for search engines to see trust between your website and your blog.  Especially if you’re using a sub-domain of your parent url (such as blog.myurl.com).  One of the easiest ways to get this job done is to provide a link from the homepage of your website to your blog.  It does not have to be a **marquis**, just a simple text link will do.

Consider embedding a YouTube video directly into your post

Video can add that special something for search spiders and for your readers!  Here’s a quick how to:

Find the URL of your YouTube video, copy it

Create a code string in your editor where you’d like the video to show up, it looks like this:

Where URL is the specific URL of the YouTube video you wish to embed.  It must be exactly like this – square brackets and no spaces!

Save your post – the video will show on the front end (it will always look like the code string on the back end)!

Simple Internet Tip:

Did you know that you can “zoom-in” on any website?  If you have a scroll button on your mouse you can hold the ‘Ctrl’ key on your keyboard while scrolling your mouse up and down to zoom in to any website for easier reading!  Pretty cool – thanks to Dava Behrens for the fabulous tip!
